If you must know, my favorite lunches lately involve ground pork browned with garlic and ginger, sautéed carrots and cabbage cooked down in some soy sauce and chili paste, a nice little heap of hot rice, a dusting of Chinese five-spice.

Yes, meet The Egg Roll Bowl. I made them, and loved them, and now make them regularly for meal prep. But really, this one is all you guys!

I asked a few months into my maternity leave this fall what your favorite easy recipes were, and SO MANY OF YOU said Egg Roll Bowls!

To which I said: mmmk what the heck is an Egg Roll Bowl?!

To which the internet said: seasoned ground pork and veggies and… kind of whatever else you want… in a bowl. Like an egg roll, but without the wrapper.

And when I realized how

these were, I was all over it.

The fact that you can buy a bag of pre-shredded coleslaw (sans sauce) and toss it in the pan with your pork, garlic, ginger, and soy sauce and pretty much have this meal, like, completely done? it’s a game changer.

You know I love fast and easy when it comes to meal prep, so all aboard, because this egg roll train is speedy fast.

Two final notes.

  1. Chinese five spice. A new ingredient for us here at POY, but in my opinion, it is worth adding a bottle of this to your spice cabinet even if it is solely for this recipe. I find that a little dash takes this from generic-stir-fry to LEGIT EGG ROLL BOWL. You’re gonna add it, and you’re gonna taste it, and you’re gonna say, yep. There it is. There’s the egg roll taste I’m looking for.
  2. If you fry up some wonton wrappers and stick them in the bowl to be a little extra, I might propose to you.

Description

Egg Roll in a Bowl! Ground pork browned with garlic and ginger, sautéed carrots and cabbage cooked down in some soy sauce and chili paste, a nice little heap of hot rice. YUM.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 knob of ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice 
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • chili paste to taste
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 56 cups shredded cabbage or coleslaw mix
  • 3 large carrots, diagonally sliced
  • Rice and green onions for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and ginger and saute until fragrant.
  2. Add the five-spice, soy sauce, chili paste, and pork. Break apart until the meat is browned and cooked through.
  3. Add the coleslaw mix and carrots. Toss until the vegetables are tender-crisp.
  4. Serve over rice, with green onions and Sriracha if you like that kinda thing. (I do.)

Five-Spice: You can make this recipe without it, but I LOVE the flavor that it adds. There’s a little bit of anise in there, and to me, this is what makes it taste like a real egg roll!

        I love when POY adds nutritional info as an extra but if its that important to your family, you may want to consider figuring it out yourself. There are many ways to do this, one being myfitnesspal. Many (most? ) people do not care about the nutrition info so it can be a lot of extra work to add and if I might add, not always that accurate.

          Yes my husband uses myfitnesspal and is able to enter any changes I make as well, just as adding an extra carrot, or the rice I make to go along with this recipe.
          This recipe was a hit with my family and I’m planning to make it again next week when we have out of town visitors!

      Haven’t made it yet, but looking fwd to it. I have Celiac so a lot of times it’s hard to get healthy but “normal” tasting recipes. I’ll use the GF soy sauce but it’s not that great, we’ll see. I love vietnamese and Thai food as it’s something I can eat. Any special recipes for those? Thx for the recipe can’t wait to try other recipes. Ttys

    I think you sealed the deal for me on hunting down some Five Spice! I’ve been making egg roll bowls for a while now — the first time I tried it was super blah, but the next time I kicked up the ginger, added a good shake of rice vinegar, and served it with green onions and a pile of cilantro. And oh my goodness. SO GOOD. The toppings are definitely game-changing. Also saving my life is jarred ginger puree from the brand Ginger People. It tastes just like fresh ginger in recipes but you can spoon it out in 2 seconds while holding a baby!!

    Made this for dinner, all the kids asked for seconds, even the picky one. Truly only took about 15 minutes, which I find to be unusual even when a recipe claims it’s quick. Great flavor, though I did add some extra soy sauce to my bowl since I’m a bit of a salt fiend. My first recipe for your site, now I’m hooked!
